is a designer clothing brand founded in 2013 by South Asian-American designer Sheena Sood in Brooklyn, New York, with a name taken from the Portuguese word for pineapple — a memory from her time traveling along the coast of Brazil where fruit vendors would sing out the names of their wares. Sood, who is originally from India and grew up in the United States after living in South America and traveling extensively, channels a vibrant blend of world cultures, sustainable production techniques, and ancient textile craft into every collection. The brand uses handloom and naturally dyed textiles, integrating weaving, beading, embroidery, and plant-dyeing traditions at risk of disappearing, working with artisan communities in India to keep these crafts alive. Dynamic silhouettes and bursts of color have become the hallmarks of Abacaxi, with each collection drawing inspiration from Sood's personal travels and experiences in the natural world.
