About

TKEES is a minimalist Canadian footwear and clothing label for women and kids, founded in Toronto in 2009 by wife-and-husband duo Carly Burnett and Jesse Burnett. After searching for the perfect barely-there flip-flop that was accessible and responsibly produced, the couple created their own. Carly, the brand's creative director, co-founded TKEES at 29 and attended trade shows with her three-month-old, and her elevated tomboy aesthetic and love of symmetry and minimalism shape every design. The now-iconic Lily flip-flop launched in five nude shades and set the pace for timeless staples such as the Square Toe Lily, Lily Braid and sandals like the Riley and Lennon. The line has grown into CloudSoft hoodies, joggers, tees and cashmere knits. Its flip-flops and sandals are made in Brazil, handcrafted from soft Brazilian leather. TKEES believes in buying better, investing in quality over quantity, and its season-less approach helps avoid overproduction and reduce waste with its European and Brazilian partners. Early pairs gifted to Jennifer Aniston and Ashley Olsen helped make TKEES a celebrity favourite, later worn by Jennifer Lopez, Cindy Crawford and Vanessa Hudgens. The brand opened its first store in the Miami Design District in 2020.

Bahhgoose

Canada · Est. 2018 · Affordable

Bahhgoose is a minimalist Canadian clothing label for women, founded in Campbell River in 2018 by designer Emily Craddock. A Canadian-owned, female-led brand, it creates easy, everyday pieces from natural fabrics, designed in Campbell River on Vancouver Island and brought to life with a small group of artisans. The collection includes dresses, tops, trousers, skirts, knitwear and caps, with signature styles such as the Rio Dress, Rose Dress and Nuage Dress, the San Halter Top, the Nua Top and the Sig and Hue pants, in shades from noir and latte to hibiscus and matcha. Pieces are made in Indonesia, handcrafted in Bali in small batches. Bahhgoose works with linen-cotton blends, cotton, rayon and viscose, and says it pays its artisans a fair wage. Producing in small batches keeps its handmade pieces limited and its process close to the makers. Bahhgoose runs its own boutique in Canggu, Bali, sells online through Garmentory and its own store, and is stocked by Canadian boutiques such as Euspira.

Soft Focus

Canada · Est. 2017 · Affordable

Soft Focus is a Canadian minimalist loungewear label for women, founded in Toronto in 2017 by Sammi Smith. After a decade working for some of Canada's most loved fashion brands, Smith left her nine-to-five to work for herself and faced a new daily question: how to get dressed for work when the office is the couch and a laptop. At first she wore her old pyjamas all day, but eventually wanted to get dressed again, and Soft Focus was born. The label is a playful vision of fancy pyjamas for the modern age, a uniform for work-from-home lifestyles created years before that became the norm. Its pieces include the Demi Set, the Foundation Set, the Contessa Shirt, crop camis, robes and terry sweatsuits, made in Canada. Smith designs collared sleep shirts that can become breezy blouses and terry sweatsuits that double as a cosy pantsuit, using quality natural fabrics. The shop has also offered zero-waste scrunchies and resold vintage cashmere. For six years Soft Focus sold direct to consumers and through boutiques across North America, building a community of comfort lovers. The shop is currently on a break while Smith consults for other retail brands.

Laing is a New Zealand womenswear label specialising in cashmere and knitwear, founded in Auckland in 2016 by Anna Murray. A former marketing and advertising executive, Murray bought the sleepwear business of Barbara Laing in 2015, rebranded it and launched Laing in November 2016. Having started as a luxury sleepwear brand, it now designs elevated, uncomplicated and season-less pieces in New Zealand. The label is known for Grade A cashmere, including its Featherlight Cashmere V-necks, shirts and polos and oversized cashmere crewnecks. The range also includes merino pieces like the Sylvia Knit Cardigan, shirts, tops, T-shirts, linen wide-leg pants, the Invert Pleat Trouser, dresses and jackets, plus cashmere accessories such as beanies and bed socks. Laing produces in small batches of 50 to 150 units per style per season to avoid overproduction, and donates unsold items to Hospice New Zealand and the RSPCA. It focuses on natural fibres such as cashmere, merino, wool and linen, and shares guides on cashmere grading, quality and care. The independent brand is owned and run by Murray and sells online and through stockists in New Zealand, with its online shop also carrying a small edit of other brands.
