About

Anavila is an Indian designer, sustainable handmade clothing label for women, founded in Mumbai in 2011 by Anavila Misra. After a short stint abroad, Misra returned to India and began experimenting with indigenous textiles and artisanal skill, wanting to modernise and deconstruct the sari. After working with many clusters and artisans, she created the first linen sari, a comfortable, modern take on the garment that is now a staple of many sari wardrobes. Alongside its signature linen saris and festive collections such as Sarmast and Aamod, the label makes blouses, kurta sets, dresses, tunics, shirts, pants, jackets, overlays and lehengas, plus home pieces. Signature styles include the Khadi Bandi Blouse, the Anar Khadi Irregular Kurta Set and the Lilypond Pant. Everything is made in India. Anavila works closely with artisanal clusters and women across regions, from tribal artisans in Jharkhand to batik painters in West Bengal who wax linen to create water-like motifs. It chooses materials responsibly and believes mindful creation leads to mindful consumption. Misra won the Femina Women Jury Award for Arts and Design in 2017, was named in Grazia's 100 Most Influential People in Fashion, and joined the board of NIFT in 2018.

Runaway Bicycle

India · Est. 2014 · Mid-range

Runaway Bicycle is a sustainable Indian designer clothing label for women, founded in Mumbai in 2014 by Preeti Verma. Verma built the first collection in a one-bedroom apartment after work hours while holding a day job in advertising, driven by a personal need for clothes that felt comfortable before they looked good. Her lack of fashion training was offset by knowledge of traditional weaving and a belief that the most comfortable clothes are worn by children and people in physical work, such as painters, mechanics and road workers. The label makes dresses, tops, shirts, trousers, skirts and jackets, along with accessories and home décor. Everything is handmade in India, linking traditional weavers and dyers across the country, including handloom weavers in Bengal, with craftspeople in its Mumbai studio. Runaway Bicycle works with handloom and hand-spun cotton, silk, linen and wool, with some pieces hand-painted or naturally dyed. Its ethical philosophy is to make less: clothes designed to outlast trends and seasons, soften with age and withstand many washes, so customers buy less and wear longer. The label has shown at Lakmé Fashion Week and been featured by Vogue India, Vogue Singapore, Elle India and Mint.
